Statue of Liberty

Initially proposed in 1865 by the French historian, Edouard de Laboulaye, the Statue of Liberty was conceived and created by the French sculptor Auguste Bartholde. (It was) built around an iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel. The Statue was presented to the American Ambassador by the people of France on Independence Day, July 4, 1884. The Statue was dismantled and shipped to America in the summer of 1885. The $270,000 needed to build the pedestal and install the statue on Bedloe's (now Liberty) Island was raised by Americans, a significant amount of which was contributed by school children. She was dedicated by President Cleveland on Oct. 28, 1886.

What a terrific way to show how proud you are to be an American, by stitching an icon that greeted over 17 million immigrants at the end of their journeys from the Old World to the New.
