Statue of Liberty

Proposed in 1865 by French historian, Edouard de Laboulaye, the Statue of Liberty was conceived and created by French sculptor Auguste Bartholde. Built around an iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel. The Statue was presented to the American Ambassador by the people of France on Independence Day, July 4, 1884. The Statue was shipped to America in the summer of 1885. The $270,000 needed to build the pedestal and install the statue on Bedloe's (now Liberty) Island was raised by Americans.
