Re: pictures
I know the problem about 14 vs. 18. But there is now a 16 ct! It's perfect. It's readily available and I get great coverage woth two strands.

Re: pictures
My best advice is to get the newest version of PCStitch and to use the highest thread count and the most colors that you feel comfortable stitching with. A good scanner makes a difference, too.
Also, DMC's lack of color range for skin tones can make for a lot of flat areas. Not much can be done about that.
For what it's worth, I usually stitch on 22ct and I frequently use at least 100 colors. My latest works have used around 200 colors. The idea is to have as much detail as possible. But your own eyesight, manual dexterity, and experience will have a bearing on what will work best for you.

Re: pictures
jayel355's recommendation to replace floss colors that have 10 or fewer stitches with other colors is a great one. I never thought of that. It might just solve one of my problems. Thanks.

Re: pictures
I have been using PCStitch for several years and have found that having a good scanner makes all the difference. Some other suggestions might be to start using 30 colours and work your way up in increments up to 45 (for me 45 colours in one pictures is enough)until you are satisfied with how the picture will look. Then check the stitch count option and if there are colours that use 10 stitches or less (arbitrary number of my part) replace them with colours already in the pattern that are close. Also would suggest using 16 ct aida cloth, or equivalent. 14 is too big and 18 too small. Good luck. I have made many pictures and these are my own guidelines.
